Lawmakers in Peru have voted in favour of the establishment of a regulated online gambling industry that will legalize both online casino games and sports betting in the country.
Law will come into effect two months after publication in national register
The plenary session of the Congress in Peru gave its overwhelming approval yesterday to the legislation by a vote of 91-0 with seven abstentions. As a result of debate of the legislation, a regulatory framework has been established that will set out the rules for iGaming and sports betting in Peru. The legislation has set a mandatory 12% tax on all iGaming profits.
The new legislation will be overseen by the Ministry of Foreign Trade (Mincetur) on behalf of the Peruvian government. Mincetur will be tasked with ensuring that all operators are fully compliant with the new gambling laws before issuing any licenses. These mandatory licensing requirements include putting measures in place to ensure that minors and those vulnerable to the harms of gambling will be protected at all times.
With regards to bonuses, operators can only run bonus promotions once the bonus funds cannot be exchanged for real money. Meanwhile sports betting operators must display clear warnings relating to possible losses when betting.
The legislation also makes provisions for remote betting booths and rooms where gamblers can place wagers online through betting terminals.
The new gambling legislation in Peru will also allow remote sports betting rooms to be set up. Players will get to place their bets on sports games with the help of betting terminals.
The new iGaming legislation will come into effect two months after it has been published in El Peruano, the country’s official gazette.
